Wall Street awakes to 2 storied firms falling

Lehman in Bankruptcy; Merrill to Be Sold; A.I.G. Struggles
In one of the most dramatic days in Wall Street’s history, Merrill Lynch agreed to sell itself on Sunday to Bank of America for roughly $50 billion to avert a deepening financial crisis, while another prominent securities firm, Lehman Brothers, said it would seek bankruptcy protection and hurtled toward liquidation after it failed to find a buyer.
...
“My goodness. I’ve been in the business 35 years, and these are the most extraordinary events I’ve ever seen,” said Peter G. Peterson, co-founder of the private equity firm the Blackstone Group, who was head of Lehman in the 1970s and a secretary of commerce in the Nixon administration.

would be interested to hear what's happening to LEH employees. Sounds like subsidiaries to continue its operations since the bankruptcy is on the holding level.

sheesh gotta think of a nickname now?

anyway...

Stock market today was in such a volatile swing that at one point, it went from roughly -220pts to +45pts in just 5-10 mins. MS is taking a beating; crossing my fingers for GS (it was down by 22% but recovered). I hope these 2 weather out the storm. I think the US government's total bailout is at $300 billion now. Just think of the burden on us taxpayers, the Main street pays for the Wall street's greed and bad judgment :-(

I am actually skeptical about this whole bailout thing. I mean, it sounds too easy to fix this shit. The Fed just buy out all those crappy mortgage-related "exotic" assets and everything is back to normal. Haragdaach tee? Had a heated discussion with a colleague, boon uur utsaan gesen.
